Summer is in full swing, and while the longer days call for us to be outside enjoying the sunshine, it is important to remember the heat can pose a real risk to our fury companions. Whether you're heading out for a walk or relaxing at home, a few simple precautions can help keep your pet safe and comfortable all summer long.
Walk in the cooler hours
When the weather heats up, try to schedule walks and outdoor playtime in the early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Midday sun can quickly become uncomfortable for pets, especially dogs with thick coats or short noses. If your pet starts panting heavily, slowing down, or looking tired, head back indoors and give them time to cool off.
Never leave your pet in a parked car
Even on a warm day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. Cracking the windows is not enough to keep your pet safe. If your errands require leaving your vehicle, it's always best to leave your pet comfortably at home.
Always keep water nearby
Hydration is one of the easiest ways to help your pet stay healthy during the summer. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water, both inside your apartment and during outdoor activities.
If you're taking a longer walk, consider bringing a portable water bottle and collapsible bowl so your pet can take water breaks along the way.
Know the signs of heat exhaustion
Pets can overheat much faster than people, so it's important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness.
Watch for symptoms such as excessive panting, heavy drooling, weakness or unusual tiredness, vomiting, bright red gums or difficulty walking or standing,
If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool
If you plan on being near a pool, lake or beach, make sure you do not let them drink or ingest the water. Ensure they have fresh water nearby instead. If swimming, introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from their fur.
